    Why use milk replacers?

     

    Once piglets have received colostrum and are well into the habit of suckling, there are many benefits to be gained from supplementing the sow’s milk with a tasty milk replacer in the farrowing unit.

    The sow’s milk is essential for healthy pigs, but the use of high quality milk and sound management make it possible to reduce the number of nursing sows and boost the weaning process per sow.

    There are several other benefits from a sow caring for its own piglets:

    • Less stress for the piglets and sows
    • Less spreading of bacteria and viruses
    • Better welfare in the farrowing unit
    • Higher number of weaned per litter
    • Higher intake of dry feed by piglets in the farrowing unit

    Supplementary milk in the farrowing unit is an excellent means of ensuring that all piglets reach their potential milk intake during the suckling period.

    Choose the right milk 

    Regardless of whether manually distributing milk or using a cup system, the milk used must suit the age and requirements of the piglets.

    Substitutes for the sow’s own fat- and protein-rich milk have to be composed of ingredients that supplement the sow’s milk and ensure well-being and growth for the piglets.

    FOR MANUAL MILK MIXING

    Once all piglets have received colostrum, the sow’s milk can be best supplemented with Elitemilk Pigi Yoghurt.

    ELITEMILK PIGI

    A milk replacer based on skimmed milk and whey powder. Ideal for use as a supplement to the sow’s milk during the first few days after farrowing

    VILOMILK BASIC

    A milk replacer composed of quality ingredients. Good at ensuring high energy intake in the baby unit and for the smallest weaners. Ideal for mixing with a prestarter to increase the content of lactose and energy.

    BABYMILK 18/18

    Babymilk 18/18 is a tasty supplement based on milk to smooth the transition from the sow’s milk to solid feed in the early weaning unit. Ideal for mixing into weaning feed, such as milk soup or as a top dressing in long feeding troughs.

    TIPS FOR MANUAL MIXING OF MILK REPLACERS:

    1. 
    Offer milk in small portions from 12 hours after birth

    2.
    The milk powder must be thoroughly stirred to eliminate lumps.

    3. 
    Mixing is easiest at 45-55 degrees C

    4. 
    Offer in a bowl twice a day

    5. 
    Adjust daily amount to ensure that the piglets empty the bowl within a couple of hours

    6.
    Offer a prestarter from day 5 alongside
    the milk

    FOR MILK CUP SYSTEMS

     

    Supplying milk via milk cup feeding systems can be a good booster in the farrowing unit, but still requires attention from the personnel. Once the system is installed, frequent minor adjustments to daily routines will be required:

    • The sows will have to accommodate more pigletsCleaning the system and cups must be a daily routine
    • Secure access to milk in the cups when the sows are active and feeding. When the sow is feeding, the piglets will also usually be active around the cups
    • Supplement early with a good prestarter, so the piglets get started on dry matter intake

    Common to all 3 types of milk supplied by Vilomix for milk cup systems is that they:

    • Maintain a stable pH-value after 24 hours of mixing

    • Have a high content of coconut oil with the best fatty acid composition for suckling pigs and piglets
    • Have very small fat particles to increase digestibility

    CLEANING AND HYGIENE
    Regular cleaning and disinfection of the system is essential to maintain high milk quality. This applies to systems that shut down when not in use, non-return systems and new systems with return. We are always ready if you need advice.

    Suitable for piglets from day 12-14. Works in most milk cup systems. (Except Pump’n’Grow)
